The journey from Torino di Sangro Marina to Elba Island is long, covering scenic local roads that highways don’t reach. Around 8 pm, driving along the S71 toward Follonica, hunger struck. With no restaurants or cafés in sight, I noticed an old, slightly rundown golf club with a sign reading “Open only for dinner” and decided to give it a chance.
An unexpected vintage gem
I entered through a green gate beneath an arch bearing the words “Golf Club,” and found myself walking along marble tiles that must have been at least 50 years old. Under a veranda draped with grapevines, green-painted metal tables and classic Thonet chairs completed a charmingly nostalgic atmosphere, enhanced by Patty Pravo singing “Pazza Idea.”
The atmosphere immediately transported me to a delightful 1960s Italian film, reminiscent of “Sapore di Mare.” Families happily toasting, dogs resting beneath tables, and the distant sound of the sea created a perfect, cinematic moment.
I sat down at the last available table, feeling unexpectedly relaxed and delighted. The smiling owner suggested the day’s specials, and I ordered the spaghetti with clams—so delicious I nearly ordered a second portion. Paired with a delightful glass of white wine from Tenuta la Chiusa in Portoferraio, my evening became a memorable prelude to the wedding ahead.
As Frank N. Furter wisely said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Arrival at Isola d’Elba
Finishing with a quick coffee, I rushed toward Piombino, eager to catch the ferry to Portoferraio. Tomorrow, I would photograph the magical wedding of Annalisa and Simone at Tenuta la Chiusa, the same estate that provided tonight’s excellent wine—clearly, destiny at play!
